Fly Fishing in Montana

Unpressured water by design. Rivers and spring creeks across the Yellowstone River Basin, chosen for the experience — not just productivity.

A Fly Fishing Paradise

Guided Fly Fishing on Uncrowded Waters

At Montana Fly Fishing Lodge, where you fish isn't left to chance — it's designed. Our approach to fly fishing in Montana centers on something increasingly rare: space, solitude, and the freedom to fish without pressure.

Across the Yellowstone River Basin, we guide on a carefully selected range of rivers and spring creeks — each chosen not just for productivity, but for the experience they offer. As an Orvis-Endorsed Fly Fishing Lodge of the Year Finalist, our standards are rooted in thoughtful guiding, consistent quality, and a commitment to delivering an experience that feels both seamless and personal.

Whether you're new to the sport or have spent a lifetime on the water, each day is shaped to meet you where you are — so the experience feels both approachable and deeply rewarding.

This is where fly fishing returns to what it should be. Quiet. Intentional. Unpressured.

Drift Boat Trips

Float the Yellowstone, Stillwater, and Boulder in custom drift boats. Cover miles of water, fish from the boat or hop out to wade the best runs. The quintessential Montana experience.

Walk & Wade

Wade intimate creeks and smaller rivers on foot. East Rosebud Creek, Rock Creek, and private spring creeks reward patience and presentation with technical, rewarding fishing.

Rivers & Waters We Fish

Many of these waters are fed by the high-elevation snowpack of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness — home to the tallest mountains in Montana — providing seasonal consistency that allows us to fish well, even as conditions change.

Yellowstone River →

Montana's longest undammed river. Big water, big fish, and stunning canyon scenery from a drift boat or on foot.

Stillwater River →

Crystal-clear freestone fed by the Beartooth Mountains. Exceptional dry fly water and our closest major river.

Boulder River →

Remote valley setting with willing trout and virtually no pressure. A hidden gem for anglers seeking solitude.

Bighorn River →

Montana's premier tailwater. Consistent flows, prolific hatches, and trout averaging 16–20 inches year-round.

Clark Fork of the Yellowstone →

A lesser-known gem flowing through ranch country. Underrated water with strong hatches and very little pressure.

Shoshone River →

Cross into Wyoming for aggressive cutthroat and rainbows in a dramatic canyon setting along the Yellowstone Highway.

Creeks & Smaller Waters →

East & West Rosebud, Rock Creek, and Red Lodge Creek. Intimate walk-and-wade fishing on technical small water.

Private Spring Creeks →

4.5 miles of exclusive access. Sight-fish to rising trout on pristine private water most anglers only dream about.

Mountain Lakes & Reservoirs

Burns Lake, Hogan & Luce Reservoirs, and backcountry mountain lakes. Stillwater options for a change of pace.
The Season

Every Month Offers Something Different

Our season runs from late May through mid-October. Each period brings its own character — different hatches, different water, different rhythms.

Late May – June
Early Season
Runoff produces aggressive fish on streamers. Salmonfly hatches begin on the Yellowstone and Stillwater. Big bugs, big eats, and uncrowded water as the season opens.
July – August
Peak Dry Fly
Prolific hatches across every river. PMDs, caddis, hoppers, and evening spinner falls. This is the heart of the season — warm days, long evenings, and fish looking up.
September – October
Fall Trophy Season
Solitude and big browns. Fall colors, cooler temps, and aggressive pre-spawn fish. Streamer fishing comes alive, and the rivers are yours. Many guides' favorite time of year.
