Smaller Rivers

Some of Montana’s best fishing is on the smaller water. Intimate settings, beautiful surroundings, and classic walk-and-wade fly fishing.

Intimate Walk & Wade Fishing

Patience, Accuracy, and Reward

Our smaller rivers include a mix of freestone streams, pocket water, and meadow sections — ideal for anglers who enjoy moving at a slower pace, wading through riffles and runs, and working methodically through productive water.

East & West Rosebud Creeks

The East Rosebud flows directly through the lodge property and upstream into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Classic freestone structure with riffles, runs, and pools. The West Rosebud offers deeper runs and softer edges. Both hold strong trout populations and excellent dry fly fishing.

Rock Creek

A freestone stream with diverse fishing water — tighter pocket water in the upper reaches, longer riffles and deeper pools downstream. Rock Creek supports a mix of dry fly, nymph, and streamer opportunities and fishes well throughout the season.

Red Lodge Creek

A beautiful mountain creek flowing through the Red Lodge area. Offers intimate wade fishing with willing trout in a scenic setting. A great option for anglers who appreciate smaller water and careful presentations.
Why Fish Smaller Rivers

A Different Pace

Smaller rivers offer a different pace and style compared to larger float fisheries. These waters reward patience, accuracy, and attention to detail. Anglers often find that the quiet surroundings and close connection to the water make these days especially memorable.

Fishing is primarily walk-and-wade. Our guides focus on productive sections that match current flows and guest ability. Depending on the season, anglers may fish dry flies, nymph rigs, or small streamers.

These rivers are well suited for anglers who prefer to be on foot, enjoy reading water, and appreciate the challenge and satisfaction of well-earned fish.

"Walking East Rosebud Creek right from the lodge in the evening was magical. The light was golden, the creek was glass, and I could see trout rising in every pool. I caught a beautiful brown on a size 16 parachute adams. That's the kind of fishing you never forget."
