Angler wade fishing on a scenic Montana stream

Walk & Wade Fly Fishing

Step into the river on your own feet. Intimate water, unhurried pace, and the purest form of the sport.

On Foot, In the Current

The Purest Form of Fly Fishing

Walk-and-wade fly fishing is the most intimate way to experience Montana's rivers and creeks. You're standing in the current, reading the water, choosing your approach, and making every cast count. There's a connection to the river that you simply don't get from a boat.

Our guides lead you to productive stretches of smaller rivers and creeks where wading is the ideal — and often the only — way to fish. You'll work through riffles, runs, and pools at your own pace, focusing on the water in front of you rather than covering miles.

Wade trips are well suited for anglers who enjoy a more active, hands-on approach. You'll move through the water, spot fish, adjust your position, and present flies at close range. The fishing rewards patience, accuracy, and attention to detail.

For anglers staying multiple days at the lodge, we recommend mixing float days with wade days. The change of pace and style keeps the fishing fresh and gives you a complete picture of what southern Montana has to offer.

Where We Wade

Creeks, Streams, & River Sections

East & West Rosebud Creeks

The East Rosebud flows directly through the lodge property and upstream into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. The West Rosebud offers deeper runs and softer edges. Both hold strong trout populations and excellent dry fly fishing throughout the season.

Rock Creek & Red Lodge Creek

Rock Creek offers diverse water — pocket water in the upper reaches, longer riffles and pools downstream. Red Lodge Creek is a beautiful mountain stream with willing trout and a scenic setting. Both reward careful presentations.

Boulder River Sections

Select sections of the Boulder River fish beautifully on foot. Remote valley settings with virtually no pressure. The river runs through some of the most beautiful country in Montana — a wade trip here feels like stepping back in time.

Techniques & Approach

Dry Fly & Sight Fishing

Wading puts you at eye level with the water, making it easier to spot rising fish and present a fly accurately. During hatch activity, wade fishing is often the most effective — and most exciting — way to target feeding trout.

Nymphing Riffles & Runs

Working a nymph rig through productive riffles and runs is a bread-and-butter wade fishing technique. Your guide positions you for the best drift and helps you read the water to find where trout are holding.

Small Stream Tactics

On smaller creeks, shorter casts, lighter tippet, and a stealthy approach are essential. Your guide will coach you on creek-specific tactics — roll casts, bow-and-arrow casts, and reading micro-currents in tight quarters.
"Walking East Rosebud Creek right from the lodge in the evening was magical. The light was golden, the creek was glass, and I could see trout rising in every pool. I caught a beautiful brown on a size 16 parachute adams. That's the kind of fishing you never forget."
